The Wycliffe Global Alliance (WGA) began with William Cameron Townsend’s vision in the 1930s, sparked by his encounters with indigenous peoples in Guatemala. Townsend founded the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) in 1934, laying the foundation for what would become the Alliance. SIL’s approach combined linguistic research with community engagement, empowering local speakers.
Through Camp Wycliffe, linguists trained and the Wycliffe Bible Translators emerged, spreading literacy and empowerment globally. Despite challenges, the Alliance persisted, formally established in 1991. Today, it comprises over 100 organizations in 60+ countries, impacting over 2,500 languages. Their legacy lies in transformed lives, preserved cultures, and empowered communities, showcasing the enduring power of language.

WBTC is part of the Wycliffe Global Alliance, a global network of over 100 organizations across five regions. As part of the Americas Area, we collaborate with churches and mission groups to bring God’s Word to those in need, ensuring access to Scripture in their heart languages.
Founded in Trinidad and Tobago in 1993, WBTC set out to translate the Bible into the diverse languages of the Caribbean. Our headquarters moved to Jamaica in 2007, where we continue to thrive, impacting lives across six nations through faith, culture, and community. Our work reflects the region’s rich linguistic diversity and unwavering commitment to spiritual growth.
